To change a bathroom door handle, you need to remove the old handle and privacy thumbturn, unscrew the latch mechanism, and install the new hardware in reverse order. [1, 2, 3]
Tools Required
- Phillips and flathead screwdrivers
- Allen key / Hex key (if your handle features hidden grub screws)
- New bathroom handle set (including matching spindles and privacy thumbturn) [3, 4, 5]
Step 1: Remove the Old Handle and Thumbturn
- Loosen grub screws: Check the underside of both handles for a tiny grub screw. If present, loosen it using an Allen key. [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
- Expose the faceplate screws: If you cannot see any screws on the main plate (the “rose”), it is covered by a decorative plate. Pop a flathead screwdriver into the small notch at the bottom edge to pry it off, or simply unscrew it counterclockwise. [9, 10]
- Unscrew the plates: Remove the mounting screws from the faceplates on both sides of the door. [9]
- Pull the handles apart: Pull the interior and exterior handles straight out from the door. Remove the central metal square bar (the spindle). [9, 11]
- Remove the thumbturn: Use a screwdriver or Allen key to remove the locking thumbturn mechanism from the lower hole of the door. [12]
Step 2: Remove the Old Latch and Strike Plate [13]
- Extract the latch: Go to the side edge of the open door. Remove the two screws holding the latch plate in place. Slide the entire latch mechanism out of the door.
- Remove the strike plate: Unscrew and remove the metal strike plate located on the door frame. [4, 9, 11, 13, 14]
Step 3: Install the New Latch and Strike Plate [13, 15]
- Check compatibility: Ensure your new hardware aligns with the existing holes. The Screwfix Compatibility Guide recommends measuring your door thickness and backset before buying replacements. [16, 17]
- Insert the new latch: Push the new latch mechanism into the side hole of the door. Crucial: The angled, sloped side of the latch bolt must face the door frame so it clicks shut smoothly. [3, 18]
- Secure the latch: Screw the latch faceplate tightly to the door edge. [3, 18]
- Fix the strike plate: Screw the new strike plate onto the door frame. [3, 18]
Step 4: Fit the New Handles and Privacy Lock [5, 19, 20]
- Insert the spindles: Push the large handle spindle through the top hole of the latch. Then, push the smaller 5mm lock spindle through the bottom locking hole.
- Mount the handles: Align the new handle over the spindle and push it flush against the door. Do the same for the handle on the opposite side.
- Secure with screws: Drive the mounting screws through the plate into the door. Use a manual screwdriver rather than a power drill to avoid stripping the screw heads.
- Attach the thumbturn: Slide the thumbturn lock over the lower spindle on the inside of the bathroom, and the emergency release slot on the outside. Secure them down with their fixings.
- Finish and test: Pop or screw the decorative cover plates back over the roses. Tighten any grub screws underneath the handle levers. Test the locking mechanism while the door is open to verify that it extends and retracts without sticking. [3, 5, 9, 18, 21, 22]
If you run into any issues during installation, please let me know:
- Do your old handles have visible screws or are they completely hidden?
- Are you replacing a lever handle or a round doorknob?
- Does the new hardware align with the existing screw holes or do you need to drill new ones?
